Original: Katie Zacharia's debut shows the pitfalls and possibilities of White House press secretary's role
Katie Zacharia has stepped into the White House press secretary's podium for the first time, in a debut that observers say highlighted both the promise and the hazards of the job. The briefing role demands defending administration policy while facing rapid-fire questioning, and her first performance is being assessed as an early sign of how she will handle the pressure.
Why now: Her first turn at the podium is new, and press secretaries' debuts are closely scrutinised for signals about the administration's communication style.
