The pistol shrimp is drawing attention for its extraordinary hunting mechanism: it snaps its oversized claw shut so fast that it fires a water jet creating a cavitation bubble. When the bubble collapses, the shockwave hits roughly 200 decibels, produces a flash of light and briefly reaches temperatures near 4,700°C, hot enough to stun its prey.
