UN Human Rights Council elects 15 new members
Original: UN Human Rights Council elects 15 members in uncontested vote
The UN General Assembly has elected 15 new members to the Human Rights Council in a vote with no contested seats. The uncontested slates mean member states were approved without competition, a practice critics say limits accountability in choosing countries tasked with monitoring rights worldwide.
Why now: The lack of competition in electing rights watchdog members draws criticism over the council's credibility.
