Air Force Tests New Sentinel Reentry Vehicle
The US Air Force has carried out a test of a new reentry vehicle for the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile programme, which is set to replace the aging Minuteman III fleet. The test marks a step in developing the hardware that will carry nuclear warheads on the next-generation missile. Little detail beyond the test itself has been released, and the milestone comes as the Sentinel programme faces cost overruns and scrutiny in Congress.
Why now: The Sentinel nuclear modernisation programme is under congressional scrutiny over costs, so any test progress draws attention.
