Skier's icy canyon survey cut short by bitter cold
Original: W-fork Canyon survey today from trailhead 2400m. Very deep and shaded, narrow at times w 3600-3824m terrain S-wall. Coul
A backcountry skier surveying West Fork Canyon set out from a 2400m trailhead into a deep, shaded gorge flanked by 3600-3824m terrain on its south wall. Dressed for sunny conditions around 0-1C, they were met with temperatures near -6C, thin gloves, and icy trail surfaces, forcing them to turn back roughly 8km in at 2600m. Snow cover was limited but the route was treacherously slick, with only minor slips reported.
Why now: The striking gap between expected sunny-slope temperatures and the reality of deep-canyon cold makes the trip report a talking point among winter backcountry enthusiasts.
