Military archbishop asks Catholics be excused from livestreamed execution
Original: Military archbishop asks that Catholics be excused from livestreamed execution
The head of the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services has asked that Catholic military personnel be excused from any duties involving the livestreaming of an execution. The request, reported by Religion News Service and The Christian Century, raises questions about the role of religious conscience in carrying out state-sanctioned executions and the accommodation of faith-based objections within the armed forces.
Why now: It highlights the tension between military duties and religious conscience at a time of renewed attention to executions in the United States.
