A quotation attributed to Thomas Paine is being shared widely: 'To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture.' Readers are passing it along as a pointed remark on the futility of debating those who reject reasoned argument.
Why now: The quote resonates with current debates about arguing with people seen as immune to reason.
