Progressive Lawmaker Calls for Abolishing Homeland Security
Original: Don’t Stop at ICE, Says Progressive Dem: Abolish the Department of Homeland Security
A progressive Democrat is calling not just for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but for dismantling the entire Department of Homeland Security. The argument, reported by The Intercept, extends a growing debate within the party over immigration enforcement agencies created after the September 11 attacks. The remarks reflect a widening split among Democrats over how far to go in reforming US immigration and security institutions.
Why now: Debate over ICE and immigration enforcement is intensifying within the Democratic Party, and calls to abolish the whole department push that argument further.
