A survey reported by Ukrinform finds that almost 40% of Ukrainians do not know who Yevhen Konovalets was. Konovalets was the leader of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, assassinated in 1938, and remains a symbolic figure in Ukrainian national history. The finding has prompted discussion about public knowledge of historical figures and how history is taught.
Why now: New survey data on gaps in Ukrainians' knowledge of a major historical figure is sparking debate about historical memory and education.
