Remembering the ABA, the League That Transformed the NBA
Original: Remembering the ABA, a Vibrant Basketball Fever Dream That Transformed the NBA
Sports Illustrated is looking back at the American Basketball Association, the flamboyant rival league of the 1960s and 1970s remembered for its red-white-and-blue ball, three-point line, dunking flair and freewheeling style. The feature argues the ABA, which merged with the NBA in 1976, permanently changed professional basketball and left a lasting mark on today's game.
Why now: A retrospective sports feature has renewed nostalgia and discussion about the defunct league's legacy.
