Images circulating online show untreated sewage running down ghat steps straight into the Ganges, turning the water black at popular bathing spots. The scenes have drawn attention because people bathe and pray in the same stretch of river just metres away. Commenters are questioning hygiene standards and the state of pollution control along one of India's most sacred waterways.

Why now: The stark contrast between the river's sacred status and the visible raw sewage pollution is provoking strong reactions about sanitation in India.

Evidence

Sewage flows directly into the Ganges. Black water comes down the ghat steps into the river. Right there, people bathe and pray. Doesn't look very hygienic to us, but that's what the video shows: sewage feeds the water where they bathe. · RadioGenoa · 2.3K
