Original: Why Mamdani opposes RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's NYC event
New York political figure Zohran Mamdani has spoken out against an event in the city featuring Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Hindu nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Mamdani, who is of Indian descent, has criticised the RSS and its ideology, drawing attention to concerns among diaspora and human rights groups over the organisation's role in Indian politics and its presence abroad.
Why now: Mamdani's high-profile criticism of a contentious Hindu nationalist figure has reignited debate over the RSS's influence in the diaspora.
