New measures announced in the UK will allow fly-tippers to be fined up to £5,000 as part of a government crackdown on illegal waste dumping. The policy, reported by BBC News, is aimed at deterring people from dumping rubbish in streets, countryside and private land. Reaction so far centres on whether the penalties are tough enough to curb a problem councils say is widespread.
Why now: A new enforcement measure against illegal dumping has just been reported, prompting debate over litter and waste crime
