Military archbishop denounces 'public spectacle' of Hasan execution

Original: Military archbishop denounces 'public spectacle' of Hasan execution, obliges Catholic recusal

The archbishop for the US military services has denounced the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan as a 'public spectacle' and has obliged Catholic priests serving in the military to recuse from taking part in it. The move has drawn attention in Catholic outlets and reopened debate over the death penalty and the handling of the long-delayed execution.

Why now: The rare combination of a senior church figure rebuking a US military execution and ordering clergy to recuse themselves has sparked debate over capital punishment and church-state relations.
