Wellcome Collection shares Theodor von Holst's Frankenstein frontispiece

Original: Frankenstein (1831) by Theodor von Holst, William Chevalier, from Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Source: Wellc

The Wellcome Collection has made publicly available the 1831 frontispiece to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, drawn by Theodor von Holst and engraved by William Chevalier. The image comes from the Wellcome Collection via the PD Image Archive, an openly licensed repository of public-domain artworks. Von Holst's illustration, created during Shelley's lifetime, is widely regarded as the first visual interpretation of the novel, showing the Creature collapsed in despair while Victor flees the laboratory.

Why now: The public-domain image archive is circulating a striking early illustration of one of literature's most famous works.
