The Archbishop for the U.S. military says Catholic soldiers should not take part in firing squad executions, arguing that directly taking a life in this way conflicts with Church teaching. The statement touches on the role of religious conscience in military service and comes amid ongoing debate in the United States over the use of firing squads in capital punishment.

Why now: The archbishop's guidance raises fresh questions about religious objection to execution duty at a time when firing squads are being debated in the U.S.
