The UN's development chief has warned that a global rise in poverty should be treated as 'a wake-up call for the world'. The statement, carried by UN News, warns that recent increases in hardship demand urgent international attention. Online, some readers responded cynically, arguing the warning has been ignored for years and that privileged people have shown little interest in tackling poverty.
Why now: A senior UN official's warning about growing global poverty is prompting debate about the world's failure to address it.
