Parasitic Fly Uses Rhythm Structure to Target Crickets
Original: Parasitic fly judges cricket songs by rhythm structure, not just pulse rate
Researchers report that a parasitic fly that locates crickets by their songs identifies them not just by pulse rate but by the structure of their rhythm. The finding refines understanding of how the fly's auditory system distinguishes host calls, with implications for bioacoustics and the study of sound-based parasitism in insects.
Why now: New research challenges the assumption that pulse rate alone drives the fly's host detection.
