Marco Rubio criticised over 'Western civilization' rhetoric
Original: Marco Rubio is promoting troubling ideas about ‘Western civilization’ | Ted Widmer https://www. theguardian.com/commenti
A Guardian opinion piece by historian Ted Widmer argues that Marco Rubio, serving as secretary of state in the Trump administration, is advancing troubling ideas about 'Western civilization' in his foreign policy messaging. Widmer ties the rhetoric to Greece and Europe, warning that framing diplomacy around civilizational identity risks narrowing US relations with the rest of the world and echoing older, exclusionary narratives.
Why now: Rubio's civilizational framing of US foreign policy is drawing fresh scrutiny and debate over its ideological implications.
