Anniversaries are prompting renewed attention to Gillo Pontecorvo, the Italian director of The Battle of Algiers, who died 20 years ago, and to the film's 1966 release in Italy, 60 years ago. France, where the film depicts the Algerian war of independence, did not show it until 1971. Commentators highlight the film's still-contested question of what distinguishes a liberation struggle from terrorism, and Ennio Morricone's celebrated score.
Why now: The coincidence of the 20th anniversary of Pontecorvo's death and the 60th anniversary of the film's Italian release has revived discussion of its political themes.
