GOP Hopes Pro Sports Stars Can Energize Midterm Campaigns
Original: GOP looks for midterm enthusiasm boost from pro sports stars
Republicans are looking to former and current professional athletes to energize their campaigns ahead of the midterm elections. The party is recruiting sports stars as candidates, surrogates, and fundraising draws, betting their name recognition will boost enthusiasm among voters who might otherwise sit out a midterm. The strategy mirrors similar efforts in past cycles, when candidates with athletic backgrounds ran for governorships and House seats.
Why now: The midterms are approaching and both parties are searching for high-profile figures who can draw attention and turnout.
