Chile shifts its historic stance on Western Sahara

Original: frente polisario

Chile's Foreign Ministry has acknowledged before the Chamber of Deputies a shift in the country's historic position on Western Sahara, distancing itself from the United Nations' stance on the disputed territory. The move puts Chile at odds with the long-standing UN framework and touches on the status of the Frente Polisario, the movement seeking independence for the region. The disclosure has drawn attention in Spanish-speaking media.

Why now: Chile's government formally admitted a change in its long-standing policy on Western Sahara, a sensitive international issue involving the Frente Polisario.
