Debate Resurfaces Over Christopher Columbus's Legacy
Original: Christopher Columbus's legacy
Discussion of Christopher Columbus's legacy is drawing fresh attention, with people weighing his role in opening contact between Europe and the Americas against the colonisation, enslavement and disease that followed for Indigenous populations. Cities and states across the United States have in recent years replaced Columbus Day observances with Indigenous Peoples' Day, and the debate over monuments, place names and school curricula continues to divide public opinion.
Why now: Debates over Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day tend to resurface each October, prompting renewed argument over how history should remember him.
