Timekeepers set to vote on scrapping the leap second
Original: Timekeepers to vote on ditching the leap second
Global timekeeping authorities are preparing to vote on abolishing the leap second, the occasional extra second added to Coordinated Universal Time since 1972 to keep clocks aligned with Earth's irregular rotation. Supporters argue the adjustment causes serious problems for computer systems and networks, while critics worry that dropping it will let official time drift slowly away from the solar day.
Why now: Metrologists and standards bodies are about to hold a decision vote, prompting debate among scientists and engineers over the future of global timekeeping.
