Ministers poised to cut heat pump subsidies to fund defence
Original: Ministers preparing to slash heat pump subsidies to fund defence spending
UK government ministers are preparing to cut heat pump subsidies, with part of an expected £2 billion in savings from the energy budget set to come from the boiler upgrade scheme, according to sources cited by The Guardian. The money would help fund increased defence spending, prompting concern among green groups and industry about the impact on home decarbonisation efforts.
Why now: The reported trade-off between climate policy and defence spending is politically sensitive and newly reported.
