Footage showing Paris streets littered with rubbish, crowded sidewalks and makeshift barbecues is being shared widely, with viewers comparing the scenes to a post-apocalyptic film. Commenters are using the images to argue about urban decline, public order and migration, with some contrasting the French capital unfavourably with Italian cities. The images underline ongoing concerns about cleanliness and safety in central Paris.

Why now: Striking images of squalor in a famous European capital feed a wider political debate about urban decay and public order.
