Terence Tao Publishes New Essay on Illustration Beyond Proof
Original: Illustration Beyond Proof
Mathematician Terence Tao has published a new essay on his blog titled 'Illustration Beyond Proof', arguing that diagrams and visual illustrations can convey mathematical understanding in ways formal proofs alone cannot. Readers on Hacker News are debating the role of visual reasoning in mathematics, and whether illustrations can carry genuine explanatory or even evidential weight alongside rigorous argument.
Why now: Terry Tao is one of the world's most respected mathematicians, so any essay from him on how mathematics should be communicated draws wide attention.
