A free game demo on Steam is running up roughly $1,000 a day in cloud AI costs, forcing the studio behind it to take out bank loans to keep it online. The developers say they are now looking at running AI models on local hardware to escape the cloud bills. Gamers are sharing the story as a cautionary tale about the economics of shipping generative AI features in games.
Why now: The eye-watering cost of serving AI to players for free highlights the financial risks of building AI features into games.
