ESA Chief Unveils €10 Billion Plan for European Crewed Spaceflight
Original: ESA Director General Outlines €10 Billion 10-Year Plan for Sovereign European Crewed Spaceflight
ESA's Director General has outlined a €10 billion, ten-year programme to develop an independent European capability for crewed spaceflight. The plan would allow Europe to send its own astronauts to space without relying on partners such as NASA or Russia. Details on launch vehicles, timelines and funding commitments from member states have not yet been confirmed.
Why now: Europe currently depends on foreign partners for human spaceflight, so a sovereign crewed programme would be a major strategic shift, especially amid shifting geopolitics.
