A first-hand account from the researcher who observed the Gombe chimpanzee community split into rival groups and wage what became known as the four-year 'chimp war' in Tanzania is drawing fresh attention. The observer recalls reluctance to record the killings, which shattered assumptions that chimpanzees were inherently peaceful. The story highlights how the discovery reshaped understanding of primate violence and its implications for human nature.
