Bulgaria Seeks Five IRIS-T Batteries to Replace Soviet Air Defenses
Original: NATO’s Last All-Soviet Air Defense — Bulgaria Wants Five IRIS-T SLM Batteries to Escape S-200 and S-300 Dependence
Bulgaria is seeking to acquire five IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense batteries from Germany, in what would end its reliance on Soviet-era S-200 and S-300 systems. If the deal goes ahead, Bulgaria would become the last NATO member to fully retire Soviet-made air defense systems, aligning its military with Western standards amid broader European rearmament efforts.
Why now: Bulgaria's plan to replace its Soviet-era air defenses with Western systems marks a notable step in NATO's ongoing military modernization.
