Developer Builds Free Open-Source Clones of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
A developer has released free, open-source alternatives to Microsoft's core Office applications, building working clones of Word, Excel and PowerPoint that anyone can download and modify at no cost. The move is being discussed as a striking solo effort challenging Microsoft's dominance in productivity software, and as good news for users frustrated with subscriptions and licensing fees, though details on features, compatibility and who is behind the project remain limited.
Why now: Free open-source rivals to Microsoft's hugely popular Office suite naturally draw attention from users and developers.
