US Cold War nuclear city under Greenland ice leaves toxic legacy
Original: " A secret nuclear city was built under Greenland's ice by the USA. In 1967, it was abandoned but something dangerous go
The United States built Camp Century, a secret nuclear-powered base buried beneath Greenland's ice sheet, and abandoned it in 1967. Nuclear waste, diesel fuel and toxic chemicals were left behind, and melting ice linked to climate change raises the risk they could eventually leak into the environment. The buried Cold War relic and its hazardous contents are drawing renewed attention.
Why now: Concern that climate-driven ice melt could expose the abandoned radioactive and toxic waste is resurfacing the story.
