Iceland plans to drill into magma for geothermal energy
Original: Iceland is playing with volcanic fire when they taunt Surtr like this https://www. zmescience.com/science/news-sc ience/
Iceland is moving forward with the Krafla Magma Testbed, an ambitious plan to drill directly into a magma chamber beneath the Krafla volcano to harness extreme geothermal heat for energy. Commenters are joking that the country is 'taunting Surtr', the fire giant of Norse mythology, by deliberately poking at volcanic fire. Scientists see it as a chance to study magma up close and unlock far more powerful geothermal power.
Why now: The audacious plan to drill into an active magma chamber captures attention for both its scientific promise and its mythological audacity.
