Original: After free Adobe clones, developer takes aim at Microsoft office with open-source alternatives

A developer known for creating free Adobe software clones is now turning to Microsoft's Office suite, working on open-source alternatives to Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The project follows earlier free tools that imitated Adobe's creative apps, and it adds momentum to the broader push for cost-free substitutes to paid productivity software, a topic drawing attention in developer and tech communities.

Why now: The same developer behind popular free Adobe clones announced a new open-source challenge to Microsoft Office, a story with broad appeal to users frustrated by subscription costs.
