More than 200 high school students were injured and around 6,800 people were arrested during a week of police repression in France, according to Le Nouvel Observateur. The police watchdog IGPN has opened 24 investigations into officers' conduct. The figures point to an unusually harsh response to demonstrations, drawing criticism and close scrutiny of policing methods.

Why now: The scale of injuries and arrests during the crackdown has shocked the public and put police conduct under scrutiny.
