Original: Egypt's Fayoum mummy portraits to travel abroad for first time after restoration
Egypt is sending its famous Fayoum mummy portraits abroad for the first time after completing restoration work on the ancient artworks. The painted portraits, which date to the Roman era and covered the faces of mummies buried in the Fayoum region, are considered among the world's earliest surviving depictions of individual people. The travelling exhibition is expected to draw significant interest from international museums and audiences.
Why now: The unprecedented decision to let these rare Roman-era Egyptian artworks leave the country after restoration is newly announced news.
