Egypt's Fayoum mummy portraits to travel abroad for first time
Original: Egypt’s Fayoum mummy portraits to travel abroad for first time after restoration
Egypt is preparing to send its celebrated Fayoum mummy portraits abroad for the first time, following restoration work on the ancient works. The portraits, painted on wood during the Roman era and placed over mummies, are among the most treasured artifacts of Greco-Roman Egypt. Their first international tour marks a notable step in Egypt's efforts to showcase its heritage overseas after years of conservation.
Why now: The rare decision to let the newly restored portraits leave Egypt for the first time is drawing wide attention.
