SNL ancestry travel sketch prompts genealogist's advice
Original: This SNL sketch made ancestry travel look silly. An expert genealogist says there's actually a right way to do it
A recent Saturday Night Live sketch poked fun at travelers who visit foreign countries chasing their family roots, portraying ancestry trips as self-indulgent and naive. A professional genealogist has now responded, arguing there is a legitimate way to research heritage abroad: verifying records before travel and working with local archives rather than relying on DNA percentages alone.
Why now: The comedy sketch revived debate about the trend of heritage tourism and how seriously to take it.
