Hamas backs Palestinian election delay in bid for legitimacy
Original: Hamas backs election delay, sees opportunity to regain political legitimacy
Hamas has backed a delay to Palestinian elections, viewing the postponement as a chance to regain political legitimacy, according to The Jerusalem Post. Palestinian elections have been repeatedly postponed, and the group's calculated support for further delay suggests it believes a later vote could improve its standing. The move is likely to draw criticism from Palestinians seeking long-overdue polls and from rivals in Fatah.
Why now: Palestinian elections have been stalled for years, so any signal from Hamas about their timing carries political weight.
