IRCv3: the next generation of the IRC protocol
Original: IRCv3
IRCv3 is a set of extensions to the Internet Relay Chat protocol that adds features absent from classic IRC, such as message tags, better capability negotiation and improved reliability. Discussion around the standard has resurfaced, with people weighing how it modernises the decades-old chat protocol and whether new IRC clients and servers are adopting it.
Why now: Renewed interest in open chat protocols and IRC's continuing role among developers has put the IRCv3 specification back into conversation.
