Salamanca cathedral's astronaut carving draws fresh attention
Original: "a decorative element of the Puerta de Ramos in the New Cathedral of Salamanca, Spain." --- la Puerta de Ramos de la Cat
Attention is turning to the Puerta de Ramos on the New Cathedral of Salamanca in Spain, whose decorative carvings include the famous figure of an astronaut among its traditional grotesques. The detail was added during restoration work in the early 1990s and continues to surprise visitors who expect only medieval-era ornamentation on the historic facade.
Why now: Images of the cathedral's unusual astronaut carving circulate widely because it looks out of place on a centuries-old religious building.
