Visitor sounds alarm on UK online ID checks
Original: I did not anticipate, in visiting the UK here in 2026, that by _far_ the internet content I would be seeing most is ever
An American visitor to the UK in 2026 says the most striking feature of British internet use is the constant demand for cookie consent and government photo ID to access websites, which he calls extreme overreach. The complaints point to the Online Safety Act, which requires age verification on sites hosting adult content, and are drawing sympathy from users who see the rules as invasive privacy overreach.
Why now: The UK's Online Safety Act age-verification rules are newly in force and sparking debate over privacy and state overreach.

Evidence
- I did not anticipate, in visiting the UK here in 2026, that by _far_ the internet content I would be seeing most is every website asking for cookie consent and photos of my govt ID at _every_ turn. It's nuts. Such extreme overreach. # onlinesafetyact # overreach # internet #… · blakespot@oldbytes.space · 12
