Greg Sargent of The New Republic is flagging what he calls a big, undercovered story that could sink the GOP in the midterm elections: Donald Trump has lost support among independent voters. Sargent cites a New York Times poll, reportedly finding 68 percent of a key group turning away, and argues the press is missing the broader significance of this shift for Republicans' midterm prospects.
Why now: A New York Times poll showing Trump losing independent voters is being highlighted as an overlooked story with major implications for the midterms.
