Don Nelson's bold prediction that Dirk Nowitzki would be the next Larry Bird
Original: "He will eventually do the things that Larry Bird did" – Don Nelson predicted Dirk Nowitzki's rise to NBA stardom
Don Nelson, the longtime NBA coach, forecast early that Dirk Nowitzki would eventually do the things Larry Bird did, predicting the German forward's rise to stardom. Nowitzki went on to validate that claim, spending his entire 21-season career with the Dallas Mavericks, winning the 2011 championship and MVP honours. The resurfaced quote highlights Nelson's eye for talent and the unusual comparisons Nowitzki faced as a shooting big man.
Why now: A nostalgic quote about Nowitzki's career is recirculating among basketball fans.
