Photographers on Vancouver Island are sharing sightings of young elk during the annual rut season. Because the young males are too young to hold their own harems, they spend their time playfighting and attempting to mount one another rather than competing for mates. The images are drawing warm interest from wildlife and nature photography fans online.

Why now: It is rut season for elk on Vancouver Island, and charming photos of immature males behaving playfully are catching attention among wildlife enthusiasts.
