Colorado's St. Mary's Glacier has effectively disappeared, and climate advocates hope the loss will bring urgency to the issue of global warming and vanishing snowfields. Researchers in the state say other snowfields, including Andrews Glacier, Arapaho Glacier and Isabelle Glacier, are also shrinking, making Colorado a visible example of climate change impacts in the American West.

Why now: The disappearance of a well-known Colorado glacier is a tangible, symbolic sign of climate change, prompting renewed calls for action.
