Pope Leo rejects the death penalty
Original: Pope Leo rejects death penalty
Pope Leo has spoken out against the death penalty, rejecting its use and continuing the Catholic Church's opposition to capital punishment. The statement is drawing attention among Catholics and commentators, who see it as an early signal of how the new pontiff will address moral and political questions, and how closely he will follow his predecessors' teachings.
Why now: A new pope taking a clear stance on a contentious moral and political issue naturally generates discussion.
