Australia will keep its ban on Russian diesel imports despite reports of a Trump-Putin deal, according to Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen. Bowen said the restrictions will remain in place to prevent Russian energy revenues from funding the war in Ukraine. The announcement has been widely praised by pro-Ukraine commentators online, who applauded Canberra for holding its sanctions line while others signal potential rapprochement with Moscow.
Why now: Australia's decision to maintain sanctions on Russian energy contradicts expectations of easing pressure after a reported Trump-Putin deal.
