Whooping Cranes Learned Migration by Following Costumed Pilots

Original: Whooping Cranes Learned to Migrate by Following Costumed Pilots

Conservationists taught captive-raised whooping cranes to migrate by having pilots in ultralight aircraft dressed in crane costumes lead the birds along historic migratory routes, most notably through Operation Migration. The method, used for years in North America, allowed young cranes to imprint on the aircraft rather than humans and learn the path to their wintering grounds in Florida, helping rebuild endangered wild populations.

Why now: The remarkable and unusual conservation technique is resurfacing and capturing renewed public interest.
